School in San Juan Del Sur
Thinking about a move to Nica with kids? This article is all about the private San Juan Del Sur Day School and what it provides for the children enrolled there.
One of the most important considerations for families moving to Nicaragua is where to enroll their kids in school. The most popular destination in the country, for expats of all kinds, is San Juan Del Sur. This also happens to be my home. So I wanted to do a little article about the school here and what it offers.
The Day School was founded in 2009 by Julie Speier with the goal of providing high-quality English education to children in the community. Since then it’s become the premier educational institution. Especially popular with the expat families living in San Juan Del Sur.
They offer full-service preschool, primary, and middle school education to both Nicaraguan and foreign children. Their goal is to ensure that students can get the same (or better!) quality of education than they would get in the US, Canada or Europe.
Here’s a great video from the school:
The majority of the teachers are expats. Most of those teachers are parents as well, and were trained in Canada or the United States. This means that the level of education is similar, and in some ways a lot better, than what a student would get in public school those countries.
Not only that but, given that they are learning here in Nicaragua, the students get a true bilingual education. Speaking for myself personally as someone that learned Spanish as an adult (very slowly) I can tell you that it’s ideal to learn it while you’re young.
The school follows an international English school curriculum and covers all of the standard subjects. Plus it’s located on an organic cloud farm which provides tons of opportunities to get outdoors. The project based program means the students can get into greater detail on the parts of curriculum they find the most interesting.
The kids enjoy lots of play time in the sunshine, field trips and exploration. It’s a forward thinking institution that’s in many ways ahead of public education in Canada or the US. They also have a character building program that helps build values and grow well rounded, caring and positive kids.
The fee is $400 US per child, per month. So while it’s not cheap, it is an investment in education that offers excellent value.
Not only do the students seem to really like their school, it seems like they make a lot of great friends. My wife and I don’t have kids yet but when we do they’ll be going to the school:)
