Giving Back In San Juan del Sur
Giving back in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua
Thanks for checking out this article. This one is a little different, and I think it speaks volumes about the people here, Nicaraguans and foreigners alike, in San Juan del Sur.
In a previous article I talked about the community here and I touched on the ways that you can give back if you choose to make San Juan Del Sur home.
However, it really deserved its own article and video. This one covers a number of different organizations that give back here in the community. It’s not an exhaustive list. So if there are more you think are worth including, send them to me!
I decided to live here for a number of reasons. You can see more on why I chose San Juan. It’s my favourite place in the world to live after traveling extensively.
The people have really embraced me. My lovely wife and her family are the foremost examples. Nicaraguans in general are great people, kind, hard-working, and loving.
However, this country can be challenging for those born into limited means.
The opportunities that we take for granted in developed countries are often not available here. That is changing thanks to the organizations mentioned here.
There are some great organizations and groups of altruistic people giving back. They are giving a hand up to Nicaraguans. Providing locals the tools to build better futures. Through life skills, sports, education, job training and more.
The influx of foreigners moving to San Juan del Sur has large, long-term benefits for the local economy. Most people joining the community derive their income or resources from foreign capital inflows. They are often working remotely & digitally.
Those inflows enter the local economy on a long term, sustained basis. Without displacing local workers, and often creating employment. Nicaragua’s territorial tax system, options for international tax structuring for digital income, and low cost of living mean many have more income to spend in the local economy.
They can also support great groups like those mentioned here.

One of the most breathtaking beaches in the South Pacific can be found in Nicaragua's La Flor Wildlife Refuge. On one side of the pristine white sand is a tropical forest, and on the other is the Pacific Ocean.

A cafe, restaurant and nursery staffed entirely by people with hearing disabilities.
Customers don't have to say anything to place an order. Nicafé began as a tool to assist deaf and mute persons in finding work.
Customers are greeted with the words "Hands that speak," which is written on a sign in the restaurant's entrance. Customers are also informed by the sign that the staff is deaf.
A waiter signs a hello, leads the customer to a table, and hands the customer a menu that includes a variety of foods as well as a piece of the sign language alphabet. The menus based on Nicaraguan traditional cooking, and the coffee is excellent.
