US Airlines Return to Nicaragua

After a two-and-a-half-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, US airlines have resumed flights to Nicaragua's Augusto C. Sandino International Airport in Managua (MGA).

Due to the pandemic, American Airlines and Spirit had suspended direct flights to the country. Their return makes getting here easier, and renewed competition should correlate with decreased ticket prices.

At the time of writing the following airlines are currently flying in the country:

You can see daily arrivals and departure's on FlightRadar24.com.

Currently proof of vaccination, or a negative PCR Covid test within 72 hours of arrival, is still required at points of entry. That will likely be dropped some point in the near future, but for now it is still the requirement. Costa Rica did away with its requirements in April.

As always flying into Liberia International Airport (LIR) in Costa Rica and coming up is fairly easy. It’s only about an hour and twenty minutes by taxi or shuttle from LIR to the Costa Rican / Nicaraguan border at Peñas Blancas.

One thing to note is that Costa Rica does require an onward ticket to enter. So if you do not have a return flight out of Costa Rica planned, consider buying a fully refundable one. Or you can buy a bus ticket for about $32 from Tica Bus from Costa Rica to Nicaragua.

If you are flying in to either Nicaragua or Costa Rica, and want a connection for a shuttle, just send me a message. I'll connect you with the English speaking owner of the company I like to make it as easy as can be.
